Dr Helmer designed, developed and delivered iOS App ‘Sports Cam’ with Superinteractiv for the South Australian Sports Institute to capture images of the men’s and women’s track cycling team during training at velodrome tracks for fast trackside performance feedback. Hosting interns from Deakin University, Dr Helmer's team rapidly developed and published this iPhone camera app and provided bespoke hardware from Superinteractiv to connect with track sensors to automate capture of clear images of cyclists moving at over 63km/hr, pushing the then iPhones capability to its limit! The Sports Cam app images have assisted the Aussie team to set and reset their current World Record Time, pushing the sport to a new level of human performance.

Cycling World Record “It’s a piece of history” At the Anna Meares Velodrome the Australian men's 4km pursuit team set a record time with Kelland O’Brien, Sam Welsford, Leigh Howard and Alex Porter combining to win gold in new world record time of 3:49.8. Australian track cycling coach Tim Decker said, “This has been a long time coming and there have been so many people who have had so much impact along the way.” Sports Cam, Superinteractiv’s iPhone camera app with configurable settings and an external trigger was customised on request to meet the needs of the South Australian Sports Institute and capture images of team performance in speed training for this epic achievement. In the women’s team final, Ashlee Ankudinoff, AnnetteEdmondson, Amy Cure and Alexandra Manly had nearly lapped New Zealand on the lightning fast track in front of a sold-out crowd of 4000 spectators. Duo Stephanie Morton and Kaarle McCulloch cycled to victory ahead of New Zealand winning Gold in the women’s team sprint. Awesome work by all the team committed to excellence and innovation!
