Knowledge Experience Network

Mobile communications are enabling monitoring in the wild: the natural performance environment. The Knowledge Experience Network (KEN) technology connects mobile devices and wearable sensor systems live with a suite of online communication tools and Databases to measure, capture and stream information via ‘the cloud’ so real-time performance metrics can be shared with experts and fans in new ways. It means distance is less of a barrier to meaningful interaction. Using a team of smart phones, team data is streamed live and can be accessed via customised web portals by coaches, experts and fans. The athletes mobile device collates data from onboard accelerometers and GPS units in combination with other separate devices, including sensors on the athlete and their equipment whilst enabling two-way communication. This information is displayed on websites using maps and graphs to track the athlete’s location and performance. In 2012, KEN was used to stream live power, heart rate and position data of the men’s Greenedge and UniSA teams in the Tour Down Under cycling event in Adelaide. Later it was used by the women’s cycling team as part of the Tour of New Zealand. The data from this technology was also used to create new media experiences that allows sporting events to share live performance data with a much wider audiences than ever before.
