Smart Diaper

Incontinence is a very serious issue for many elderly patients which needs to be carefully managed. A wearable technology using textile based wetness sensors suited to typical aged care patient environments, infrastructure, and common patient postures and positions was conceived and commercialised. The materials used for the wetness sensor and their location within an incontinence pad were key to optimal function and a design was achieved that could sense wetness events (10ml) in pads at different orientations: standing upright, lying on back and lying on side. Dr Helmer was project leader and responsible for technology design, development, and management including early prototyping, intellectual property management, and commercial engagement. Formal intellectual property was established and the technology was licensed to an Australian SME.
